Empaglif M 500
Presentation:Each film-coated tablet of Empaglif M 500 contains empagliflozin 5 mg and metformin hydrochloride 500 mg.
Indications:Empaglif M 500 is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when treatment with bothempagliflozin and metforminis appropriate.Empagliflozin, one of its components, is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovasculardisease.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage should be individualized based on the patient's current regimen, effectiveness, and tolerability, not exceeding the maximum recommendeddaily dose of empagliflozin (25 mg) and metformin (2000 mg). Empaglif M 500 is usually taken twice daily with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin.The starting dose is individualized based on the patient's prior antihyperglycemic treatment. Renal function should be assessed before initiating Empaglif M 500 and periodically thereafter.Empaglif M 500 is contraindicated in patients with an eGFR below 45 mL/min/1.73 m².
Side Effects:Common side effects associated with empagliflozin may include urinary tract infections and female genital mycotic infections.Common side effects associated with metformin may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, indigestion, asthenia (weakness), and headache.Hypoglycemia may occur when Empaglif M 500 is used in combination with insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylureas) or insulin. Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious potential side effect associated with metformin.
Precautions: Empaglif M 500 is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), end-stage renal disease, or dialysis. It should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to empagliflozin or metformin, acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis. Caution is advised in patients with a history of ketoacidosis, heart failure, and liver impairment. Excessive alcohol intake should be avoided.
