Empamet 5/850

Presentation:Tablets containing empagliflozin 5 mg and metformin hydrochloride 850 mg.Various strengths may be available; refer to the packaging for the specific strength.

Indications:Indicated in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control when treatment with both empagliflozin and metformin is appropriate.Empagliflozin is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease.  

Dosage and Administration:The recommendeddose is one tablet taken orally twice daily with meals.Dosage should be individualized based on the patient's current regimen, glycemic control, and tolerability, with a maximum daily dose of 25 mg empagliflozin and 2000 mg metformin. Contraindicated in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 45 mL/min/1.73 m².Follow physician's instructions.

Side Effects:Common side effects associated with empagliflozin may include urinary tract infections and female genital mycotic infections.Common side effects associated with metformin include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort.Hypoglycemia may occur when Empamet is used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas. Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious side effect associated with metformin. Increased urination and thirst may occur due to empagliflozin.  

Precautions:Contraindicated in moderate to severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, dialysis, metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), and hypersensitivity to empagliflozin or metformin.Use with caution in patients with risk factors for lactic acidosis (e.g., excessive alcohol use, hepatic impairment, hypoxic states) and those at risk for volume depletion. Assess renal function prior to initiation and periodically thereafter. Monitor for signs and symptoms of ketoacidosis (associated with empagliflozin).
