Encorate Chrono 500

Presentation: Controlled-release tablets containing Sodium Valproate BP 333 mg and Valproic Acid BP 145 mg (equivalent to Sodium Valproate 500 mg).

Indications: Treatment of all types of epilepsy (e.g., generalized tonic-clonic seizures, absence seizures, partial seizures). Also indicated for the treatment of manic episodes in bipolar disorder and prophylaxis of migraine.

Dosage & Administration: Adults: Initially 600 mg daily in 2 divided doses, preferably after food. Dosage may be increased by 200 mg every 3 days until seizure control is achieved, up to a maximum of 2.5 g daily. Maintenance dose is usually 1-2 g daily. Children (over 20 kg): Initially 400 mg daily in divided doses, increased until control (usually 20-30 mg/kg daily). Follow physician's instructions.

Side Effects: Common: nausea, vomiting, weight gain, loss of appetite, gum swelling, headache, sleepiness, tremor. Less common: hair loss, liver injury.

Precautions: Use caution in patients with liver problems or a family history of liver dysfunction. Not recommended during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential unless clearly needed. Alcohol consumption is not recommended. May decrease alertness and cause sleepiness or dizziness. Avoid abrupt withdrawal.

Storage: Do not store above 30°C. Keep away from light and out of reach of children.
