Epicet XR 500 

Presentation: Each extended-release tablet contains Levetiracetam BP 500 mg. Available in strips or blister packs

Indications: Epicet XR 500 mg is indicated as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of:

• Partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization in adults and children from 4 years of age with epilepsy
• Myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy.
• Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy.

The extended-release formulation is designed for once-daily dosing.

Dosage and Administration: Levetiracetam extended-release tablets are administered orally once daily, at approximately the same time each day, with or without food. The tablets should be swallowed whole and must not be chewed, crushed, or broken.

• Adults and adolescents (16 years and above): The initial therapeutic dose is usually 1000 mg once daily. The dose can be increased every 2 weeks by 500 mg once daily to a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg once daily, based on clinical response and tolerability.
• Adolescents (12-17 years) weighing ≥50 kg: Dosage is the same as in adults.
• Children (4-11 years) and adolescents (12-17 years) weighing <50 kg: The starting dose is usually 20 mg/kg once daily. The dose can be increased every 2 weeks by 10 mg/kg once daily to a maximum recommended daily dose of 60 mg/kg once daily.

Dosage adjustments are recommended in patients with renal impairment. Follow the physician's instructions carefully.

Side Effects: Very common side effects include somnolence, headache. Common side effects include nasopharyngitis, anorexia, depression, asthenia/fatigue, dizziness. The extended-release formulation may help to reduce the incidence or severity of some immediate-release related side effects due to a more gradual absorption.

Precautions: Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dosage adjustment may be needed). May cause central nervous system depression; advise patients not to drive or operate hazardous machinery until they are reasonably certain that levetiracetam does not affect their ability to engage in such activities. Withdrawal should be gradual to minimize the risk of increased seizure frequency. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
