Epilim Chrono 500

Presentation: Each controlled-release tablet contains Sodium Valproate BP 333 mg and Valproic Acid BP 145 mg, equivalent to Sodium Valproate 500 mg. Tablets are typically prolonged-release and supplied in blister packs or strips.

Indications: Epilim Chrono is indicated for the treatment of various types of epilepsy, including generalized (such as absence, myoclonic, tonic-clonic, atonic) and partial seizures (simple, complex, secondary generalized). It is also used in specific epilepsy syndromes like West syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Additionally, Epilim Chrono is indicated for the treatment of mania associated with bipolar disorder and for the prophylaxis of migraine.

Dosage and Administration: Epilim Chrono tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. The controlled-release formulation allows for once or twice daily administration, preferably with food. Dosage is highly individualized and should be determined by the physician based on the patient's condition, age, weight, and response.

  • Epilepsy (Adults): Usually initiated at 600 mg daily in divided doses, gradually increased by 200 mg every 3 days until seizure control is achieved. The usual maintenance dose ranges from 1000 to 2000 mg daily.
  • Epilepsy (Children over 20 kg): Initial dose is typically 400 mg daily in divided doses, increased gradually to the usual maintenance range of 20-30 mg/kg daily, up to a maximum of 35 mg/kg daily.
  • Bipolar Disorder: The recommended initial dose is 1000 mg daily. Dosage should be adjusted as rapidly as possible to achieve the lowest effective dose, usually between 1000 and 2000 mg daily.
  • Prophylaxis of Migraine: The usual dose is 400-600 mg daily, although some patients may require higher doses.

Follow the physician's instructions carefully.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, anorexia, constipation, drowsiness, tremor, and ataxia. Less frequent side effects can include hair loss, weight gain, and changes in liver function tests.

Precautions: Epilim Chrono should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to valproate or with active liver disease or a personal or family history of severe hepatic dysfunction. It is generally contraindicated in women of childbearing potential unless other treatments are ineffective or not tolerated and the patient is enrolled in a pregnancy prevention program. It should be used with extreme caution during pregnancy due to a high risk of congenital malformations and neurodevelopmental disorders in the child. Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment, systemic lupus erythematosus, and porphyria. Avoid abrupt withdrawal of the medication. Alcohol consumption should be avoided.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
