Erosa 500 

Presentation: Erosa 500 is available as film-coated tablets, each containing Erythromycin Stearate USP equivalent to Erythromycin 500 mg. Erosa 500 is a product of Biopharma Limited in Bangladesh and is usually available in blister packs.  

Indications: Erosa (Erythromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic indicated for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

• Upper respiratory tract infections: Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis.  
• Lower respiratory tract infections: Bronchitis, pneumonia.  
• Ear infections: Otitis media, otitis externa.  
• Eye infections: Blepharitis.
• Skin and soft tissue infections: Boils, carbuncles, cellulitis, impetigo.
• Genitourinary tract infections: Urethritis, gonorrhea, chlamydial infections.
• Other infections: Whooping cough, diphtheria.  
• Prophylaxis against rheumatic fever.  

Dosage and Administration: Erosa 500 tablets should be swallowed whole with water, preferably on an empty stomach (at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after meals) to ensure optimal absorption. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection and should be determined by the physician.

• Adults and children over 8 years: The usual dose is 250-500 mg every six hours or 500 mg-1 g every 12 hours. In severe infections, the dose may be increased up to 4 g daily.  
• Children 2 to 8 years: 250 mg every six hours. For severe infections, the dose may be doubled.
• Children up to 2 years: Dosage should be as directed by the physician, typically based on body weight (30-50 mg/kg/day in divided doses).

Side Effects: Side effects with Erosa (Erythromycin) are generally mild and infrequent. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal disturbances such as:

• Nausea  
• Vomiting  
• Abdominal pain  
• Diarrhoea  
• Anorexia

Mild allergic reactions like urticaria and skin rashes may also occur.  

Precautions:Erosa (Erythromycin) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.It should also be avoided in patients with pre-existing liver dysfunction or those taking potentially hepatotoxic drugs.  

Caution should be exercised when administering Erosa to patients with impaired hepatic function, as erythromycin is principally excreted by the liver. The use of erythromycin in patients receiving high doses of theophylline may increase serum theophylline levels and the risk of theophylline toxicity.If such symptoms occur, the theophylline dose should be reduced.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: While clinical and laboratory studies have not provided evidence of harm during pregnancy, Erosa should be used in pregnant women only when clearly indicated. Erythromycin is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administering it to a nursing mother.  

Storage:Store below 25°C, away from light and moisture.Keep out of reach of children.
