Erybac

Presentation: Erybac is available in tablet form containing Erythromycin USP. The strengths available are 250 mg and 500 mg. It is marketed by Drug International Ltd. in Bangladesh and is usually available in blister packs.

Indications: Erybac (Erythromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis)
  • Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis)
  • Ear infections (e.g., otitis media, otitis externa)
  • Eye infections (e.g., blepharitis, trachoma)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., boils, impetigo)
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Prophylaxis against rheumatic fever and pre/post-operative infections
  • Other infections like diphtheria and whooping cough It is also used as an alternative to penicillin in penicillin-allergic patients.

Dosage and Administration: Erybac should be taken on an empty stomach, at least half an hour and preferably two hours before meals. The usual doses are:

  • Adults and Children over 8 years: 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections, up to 4 g or more daily in severe cases. Alternatively, one-third of the total daily dose three times a day or half the total daily dose twice a day may be administered.
  • Children aged 2 to 8 years:250 mg every six hours or 30-50 mg/kg body weight per day divided into four equal doses.
  • Infants and Children up to 2 years:500mg daily in divided doses or 30-50 mg/kg body weight daily in divided doses. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection and should be determined by a physician.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Allergic reactions, including rash and anaphylaxis, are rare but can occur. Less common side effects may include headache and reversible hearing loss. Prolonged use or high doses may rarely lead to liver problems.

Precautions: Erybac (Erythromycin) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to erythromycin or any other macrolide antibiotic. It should be used with caution in patients with impaired hepatic function. Erythromycin may interact with other drugs, such as theophylline, carbamazepine, digoxin, and warfarin, potentially increasing their serum levels and the risk of toxicity. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Erythromycin is classified as Pregnancy Category B by the FDA. While studies have not shown evidence of teratogenicity, it should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Erythromycin is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administering it to nursing mothers.

Storage: Store below 25°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
