Famoloc (Famotidine): An H2-Receptor Antagonist
Â
Famoloc contains Famotidine, a histamine H2-receptor antagonist. It works by completely inhibiting the action of histamine on the H2-receptors of the stomach's parietal cells, which are responsible for gastric acid secretion. This leads to the inhibition of basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion. Famoloc is indicated for the treatment of various ulcer conditions, reflux esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastritis.
Â
How Famoloc Works (Pharmacology)
Â
Famotidine blocks histamine receptors in the stomach:
- H2-Receptor Antagonist: Famotidine is a competitive H2-receptor antagonist. It binds to the H2-receptors on the gastric parietal cells.
- Inhibits Gastric Acid Secretion: By blocking these receptors, it prevents histamine from stimulating acid production. This results in the inhibition of basal, overnight, and pentagastrin-stimulated gastric acid secretion.
- Slowly Reversible Action: The drug dissociates slowly from the H2-receptors, providing a prolonged inhibitory effect on acid secretion.
