💊 Febustat (Febuxostat) Summary
Febustat is a selective inhibitor used for the chronic management of high uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) in patients with gout.
Chronic Gout Management: Lowers uric acid to prevent gout attacks.
Tumor Lysis Syndrome: Used at higher doses (120 mg) during chemotherapy.
⚠️ Note: It is not recommended for patients with high uric acid who do not have symptoms.
Standard Start: 40 mg once daily.
Titration: If uric acid remains above 6 mg/dL after 2 weeks, the dose may be increased to 80 mg. Further increase to 120 mg is possible if needed.
Gout Flares: When you first start Febustat, you might experience a flare-up. Doctors usually prescribe Colchicine or an NSAID alongside Febustat for the first few months to prevent this.
Common Side Effects: Gout flares, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and liver function abnormalities.
Contraindications: 🛑 Do not use if you are taking Azathioprine, Mercaptopurine, or Theophylline, as it can lead to dangerous toxicity.
Cardiovascular Warning: Monitor for signs of heart attack or stroke, as a higher rate of these events has been observed compared to other gout medications.
Liver Health: Periodically monitor liver enzymes (tests), as elevations can occur.
Category C: Use during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Breastfeeding: It is unknown if it passes into milk; use with caution.
