Femicon
Presentation: Femicon is a combined oral contraceptive pill. Each pack typically contains 28 tablets. There are 21 white or off-white active tablets, each containing 0.3 mg of norgestrel and 0.03 mg of ethinylestradiol. There are also 7 brown inert tablets, each containing 75 mg of ferrous fumarate. The active and inert tablets are usually arranged in a specific order within the blister pack to aid with correct daily intake.
Indications: Femicon is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women.
Dosage and Administration: One tablet is to be taken orally each day for 28 consecutive days. The first white (active) tablet should be started on the first day of the menstrual cycle. One white (active) tablet is taken daily for 21 days, followed immediately by one brown (inert) tablet daily for the next 7 days. After all 28 tablets have been taken, the next pack should be started immediately without a break. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a sufficient amount of liquid, preferably at the same time each day. Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs during the 7 days when the brown (inert) tablets are taken.
Side Effects: Common side effects associated with combined oral contraceptives like Femicon may include nausea, vomiting, headache, breast tenderness, changes in weight, mood changes (including depression), dizziness, and breakthrough bleeding or spotting (especially during the first few months of use). Changes in libido, fluid retention, and skin reactions may also occur.
Less common but potentially serious side effects can include the development of blood clots (such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, or myocardial infarction), liver problems (including liver tumors), high blood pressure, and gallbladder disease.
Precautions: Before using Femicon, a thorough medical history and physical examination should be conducted. Femicon is contraindicated in women with certain conditions, including known or suspected pregnancy, undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, a history of or current thromboembolic disorders (blood clots), certain cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases, known or suspected estrogen- or progestogen-sensitive neoplasms (e.g., breast cancer), liver tumors or severe liver disease, and hypersensitivity to any of the components.
Caution should be exercised in women with risk factors for thromboembolic disease, hypertension, migraine, epilepsy, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, obesity, systemic lupus erythematosus, and other medical conditions. Femicon may interact with certain other medications, including some antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and antifungals, which may reduce its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects.
Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
