Indications

Flamex is an ibuprofen-based medication available in both oral and topical forms, used to treat pain and inflammation.

• Oral Dosage Form: Indicated for a wide range of inflammatory and painful conditions, including:
  • Arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gouty arthritis, juvenile polyarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Pain & Inflammation: Low back pain, dysmenorrhea, soft tissue injuries, dental pain, and musculoskeletal pain.
  • Other: Fever and migraine.
• Topical Gel: Used to treat painful conditions of joints and muscles, such as:
  • Backache, rheumatic and muscular pain.
  • Sprains, strains, and sports injuries.
  • Non-serious arthritic conditions and nerve pain (neuralgia).

Pharmacology

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with significant anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. It works by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which reduces the production of prostaglandins. This action helps to quickly relieve pain and stiffness, reduce swelling, and improve joint movement.

Dosage & Administration

• Oral:
  • Adults: The initial dose is 400 mg three times daily. The total daily dose should not exceed 2400 mg.
  • Children: Dosage is based on body weight, with a maximum of 30 mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses. Doses range from 2.5 ml for infants (3-6 months) to 15 ml for children 10-12 years old.
• Topical Gel:
  • Adults: Apply a 4 to 10 cm strip of gel to the affected area and massage until absorbed. This can be repeated up to four times daily, with at least four hours between applications. Do not use on broken skin, cuts, or near eyes.
  • Children: Not recommended for children under 12 years.

Contraindications

Do not use Ibuprofen if you have a history of hypersensitivity to it or have a severe or active peptic ulceration.

Side Effects

Common side effects include upset stomach, vomiting, heartburn, and nausea.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Ibuprofen is not recommended for use during pregnancy or in nursing mothers unless the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks.

Precautions & Warnings

• Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal hemorrhage or ulcers.
• Long-term therapy requires regular eye exams, as ocular function changes have been reported.
• Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus are more susceptible to hypersensitivity reactions.
• Use with caution in patients with asthma or a history of hypersensitivity to other NSAIDs.
