Flamyd Suspension - (200mg/5ml)

Presentation:Each 5 ml of Flamyd Suspension contains Metronidazole Benzoate BP equivalent to Metronidazole 200 mg.Available in bottles of 60 ml.

Indications:Flamyd (Metronidazole) is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat infections caused by bacteria and parasites. It is indicated for:

• The prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria.  
• The treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes.  
• Urogenital trichomoniasis.
• Bacterial vaginosis (also known as non-specific vaginitis).  
• All forms of amoebiasis (intestinal, extra-intestinal disease, and that of symptomless cyst passers).  
• Giardiasis.  
• Acute ulcerative gingivitis.  
• Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.  
• Acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms.  
• Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.  
• In combination with other medications for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.  

Dosage and Administration: Dosage depends on the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. Always follow your doctor's prescription.

• Adults: Dosage varies widely depending on the infection. Examples include:
  • Trichomoniasis: 200 mg three times daily for 7 days, or 400 mg twice daily for 7 days, or a single dose of 2 g.
  • Amoebiasis: 400-800 mg three times daily for 5-10 days.
  • Giardiasis: 2 g once daily for 3 days or 400 mg three times daily for 5-7 days.
• Children:Dosage is usually based on body weight. Examples include:  
  • Amoebiasis: Children 1-3 years: 100-200 mg three times daily; Children 3-7 years: 100-200 mg four times daily; Children 7-10 years: 400 mg three times daily.
  • Giardiasis: Children 1-3 years: 500 mg once daily; Children 3-7 years: 600-800 mg once daily; Children 7-10 years: 1 gm once daily.  
  • For children under 12 years for anaerobic infections, the dose is typically 7.5 mg/kg body weight every 8 hours.
• Flamyd Suspension should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before meals. Shake the bottle well before each use.

Pharmacology: Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent. It works by being taken up by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, where its nitro group is reduced, forming reactive compounds that damage the pathogen's DNA, leading to cell death.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Metallic taste
• Headache
• Dryness in the mouth

Less common or serious side effects can occur. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any severe or persistent side effects.

Precautions:

• Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least 48 hours after stopping Flamyd, as it may cause a disulfiram-like reaction (nausea, vomiting, flushing, increased heart rate).  
• Use with caution in patients with central nervous system diseases or hepatic encephalopathy.
• Flamyd may darken urine.  
• Inform your doctor about any liver disease or kidney disease.
• Flamyd can interact with other medications, such as warfarin and disulfiram. Inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking. 

Pregnancy & Lactation: Flamyd is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy based on animal studies. However, use during the first trimester is usually avoided unless clearly needed. Metronidazole is excreted in breast milk, so breastfeeding should be held until the treatment is finished. Consult your doctor.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
