Flamyd

Presentation: Flamyd tablets are available in strengths of 250 mg and 500 mg, containing Metronidazole BP as the active ingredient. They are usually presented as film-coated tablets in blister packs.

Indications: Flamyd (Metronidazole) is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat various infections caused by anaerobic bacteriaand protozoa. These include:

  • Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria.
  • Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, necrotizing pneumonia, osteomyelitis, puerperal sepsis, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and post-operative wound infectionswhere anaerobic pathogens have been identified.
  • Urogenital trichomoniasis in both females and males.
  • Bacterial vaginosis (non-specific vaginitis, anaerobic vaginosis, Gardnerella vaginitis).
  • All forms of amoebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal, including asymptomatic cyst carriers).
  • Giardiasis.
  • Acute ulcerative gingivitis.
  • Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.
  • Acute dental infections caused by anaerobic organisms (e.g., acute pericoronitis and acute apical infections).
  • Helicobacter pylori infection (usually in combination with other drugs).
  • Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Flamyd depends on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age, weight, and renal function. It should be taken orally, usually with or after food.

  • Adults: The usual dosage varies widely depending on the infection. Examples include:
    • Trichomoniasis: 200 mg three times daily for 7 days, or 400 mg twice daily for 7 days, or 2 g as a single dose.
    • Amoebiasis: 750 mg three times daily for 5-10 days.
    • Giardiasis: 2 g once daily for 3 days.
    • Anaerobic infections: 800 mg initially, followed by 400 mg three times daily for 7 days.
    • Surgical prophylaxis: Dosage regimens vary, often starting before surgery and continuing for a short period post-operatively.
  • Children: Dosage is usually based on body weight and the type of infection. Consult a doctor for specific instructions.

It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor.

Alcohol should be avoided during treatment with Flamyd and for at least 24-48 hours after the last dose due to the risk of a disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps). Metronidazole can interact with several other medications, including blood thinners (warfarin), lithium, and certain seizure medications. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Metronidazole is classified as Pregnancy Category B. However, it is generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. Use during the second and third trimesters should be only if clearly needed. Metronidazole passes into breast milk, and breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment and for a period after the last dose. Consult your doctor for advice.
