Fluclox Powder For Suspension - (125mg/5ml)

Presentation: When reconstituted, each 5 ml of the suspension contains Flucloxacillin Sodium BP equivalent to 125 mg of Flucloxacillin. Available in bottles containing powder for reconstitution to [mention typical bottle size, e.g., 100 ml] suspension.

Indications: Flucloxacillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including penicillinase-producing staphylococci. Common indications include:

  • Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., boils, abscesses, cellulitis, infected wounds).
  • Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis).
  • Other infections caused by Flucloxacillin-sensitive organisms (e.g., osteomyelitis, endocarditis).
  • Prophylaxis during major surgical procedures (e.g., orthopedic and cardiothoracic surgery).

Dosage and Administration: Oral doses should be administered at least one hour before or two hours after meals for optimal absorption. Dosage depends on the age, weight, renal function of the patient, and the severity of the infection. Always follow your doctor's prescription.

  • Adults: The usual dose is 250-500 mg four times daily. Higher doses may be used for severe infections.
  • Children (2-10 years): Half of the adult dose.
  • Children (Under 2 years): Quarter of the adult dose. The powder needs to be reconstituted with the specified amount of water as mentioned on the bottle label to create the suspension. Shake well before each use.

Pharmacology: Flucloxacillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is resistant to breakdown by many bacterial enzymes (penicillinases), making it effective against some bacteria that are resistant to other penicillins.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

Less common side effects can include allergic reactions (rash, itching), and rarely, liver problems. Inform your doctor if you experience any unusual or severe side effects.

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with a history of liver dysfunction or allergic reactions, including to other penicillins.
  • Dosage adjustment may be necessary in patients with severe kidney problems.
  • Take each dose with a full glass of water and avoid lying down immediately after taking the oral suspension.

Contraindications: Flucloxacillin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to penicillins. It should also be avoided in patients with a history of flucloxacillin-associated jaundice or liver problems.

Pregnancy & Lactation: Flucloxacillin is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy. However, it should only be used if clearly needed. Small amounts of flucloxacillin may pass into breast milk. Caution should be exercised when administering to breastfeeding women.

Storage: Store the dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. The reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2°C - 8°C) and is usually stable for 7 days. Always check the product label for specific storage instructions after reconstitution. Keep out of reach of children.

Therapeutic Class: Penicillinase-resistant penicillins.
