Gavicid is a specialized antacid and antireflux combination featuring two fast-acting antacids (Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate) paired with an alginate (Sodium Alginate). It works purely via a physical mechanism that does not rely on systemic bloodstream absorption.
Upon ingestion, the solution reacts rapidly with stomach acid to form a neutral, protective "raft" of alginic acid gel that floats on top of the stomach contents. This physical barrier caps the "acid pocket," effectively trapping pepsin and bile and blocking gastro-esophageal reflux for up to 4 hours. If reflux does occur, the soothing gel is pushed into the esophagus first, coating it to prevent painful irritation.
Gavicid is indicated to treat the symptoms of:
Gastric reflux, indigestion, and bloating (flatulence) associated with reflux.
Heartburn, including heartburn experienced during pregnancy.
All forms of upper stomach (epigastric) and chest (retrosternal) burning or distress caused by acid backup.
Adults and Children over 12 years: Take 10 to 20 mL after meals and right before bedtime (up to 4 times a day).
Children 6 to 12 years: Take 5 to 10 mL after meals and at bedtime (up to 4 times a day).
Children under 6 years: Not recommended.
Crucial Instruction: Tablets must be chewed thoroughly before swallowing.
Adults and Children 12 years and over: Chew 2 to 4 tablets after meals and at bedtime (up to 4 times a day).
Children under 12 years: Give only if explicitly advised by a medical professional.
Because Gavicid creates a physical gel layer and alters stomach acidity, it can severely impair the absorption of other medications. Always separate Gavicid from other drugs by at least 2 hours, especially:
Antibiotics (Tetracyclines, Fluoroquinolones).
Heart and blood pressure medications (Digoxin, Beta-blockers like Atenolol, Metoprolol, Propranolol).
Hormones, Steroids, and Minerals (Thyroid hormones, Glucocorticoids, Iron salts).
Antifungals (Ketoconazole) and Bone-density medications (Bisphosphonates).
High Sodium Alert: Every 20 mL contains 254.5 mg of sodium. Patients on a highly restricted salt diet—such as those with congestive heart failure or kidney issues—must exercise strict caution.
Calcium Content: Each 20 mL contains 260 mg of calcium (75 mg per tablet). Use with caution if you have a history of high blood calcium (hypercalcemia), kidney stones, or calcium deposits in the kidneys.
Phenylketonuria (PKU): Because Gavicid tablets contain aspartame, they should not be given to patients with phenylketonuria.
Masking Symptoms: Do not use this medication continuously for more than 7 days. Prolonged use can mask symptoms of a more serious, underlying medical condition. It should not be used by individuals with severe renal insufficiency or low blood phosphate (hypophosphatemia).
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Extensively documented data from over 500 pregnant women shows no toxic effects on the fetus or newborn. Gavicid is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding if clinically required.
