Gavilac Suspension - (500mg+267mg+160mg/10ml) typically contains the following active ingredients per 10 ml:
- Sodium Alginate: 500 mg
- Sodium Bicarbonate:267 mg Â
- Calcium Carbonate:160 mg Â
Indications:
Gavilac Suspension is indicated for the relief of acid-related symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux, such as:
- Acid regurgitation Â
- Heartburn Â
- Indigestion Â
- Flatulence associated with gastric reflux Â
- Heartburn during pregnancy
- Epigastric and retrosternal distress where the underlying cause is gastric reflux
Dosage and Administration:
Gavilac Suspension should be taken orally after meals and at bedtime. The usual dosage is:
- Adults and children over 12 years:10-20 ml (two to four 5 ml spoonfuls) up to four times a day. Â
- Children 6 to 12 years:5-10 ml (one to two 5 ml spoonfuls) up to four times a day. Â
- Children under 6 years: Not recommended.
- Elderly:No dosage modification is usually required. Â
Mechanism of Action:
Gavilac combines two antacids (Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate) with Sodium Alginate.Upon ingestion, it reacts with stomach acid to form a raft of alginic acid gel. This raft floats on the stomach contents, creating a physical barrier that helps prevent acid reflux into the esophagus. The Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate help to neutralize excess stomach acid, providing relief from indigestion and heartburn.
Important Considerations:
- Sodium Content: Each 10 ml dose contains a significant amount of sodium (around 127-141 mg). This should be taken into account for individuals on a restricted salt diet, such as those with congestive heart failure or renal impairment.
- Calcium Content: Each 10 ml dose contains calcium (around 130-160 mg). Caution is advised for patients with hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis, and recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones. Â
- Drug Interactions: A time interval of 2 hours should be considered between the intake of Gavilac and other medications, especially certain antihistamines, tetracyclines, digoxin, fluoroquinolones, iron preparations, ketoconazole, neuroleptics, thyroid hormones, penicillamine, beta-blockers, glucocorticoids, chloroquine, estramustine, and bisphosphonates.
- Side Effects:Very rarely, allergic reactions (urticaria, bronchospasm, anaphylactic reactions) may occur in sensitive individuals.Ingestion of large quantities of calcium carbonate may lead to alkalosis, hypercalcaemia, acid rebound, milk-alkali syndrome, or constipation. Â
- Pregnancy and Lactation:Gavilac can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if clinically needed. Â
- If symptoms do not improve after 7 days, medical advice should be sought.
