Gestrenol 

Presentation: Gestrenol tablets typically contain 5 mg of allylestrenol and are usually available in strips of 10 tablets.

Indications: Gestrenol is primarily used in pregnancy-related conditions, including:

• Threatened abortion (miscarriage): To help prevent miscarriage when there is a risk.
• Habitual abortion (recurrent miscarriage): To help maintain pregnancy in women with a history of repeated miscarriages.
• Threatened premature delivery (preterm labor): To help prevent early labor.
• Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR): In some cases, it may be used to support fetal growth.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage and duration of Gestrenol treatment depend on the specific condition and the doctor's recommendations. Examples of typical dosages include:

• Threatened abortion:1 tablet three times daily until symptoms disappear.  
• Habitual abortion:1-2 tablets daily as soon as pregnancy is diagnosed,continued for at least one month after the critical period.
• Intrauterine Growth Retardation: 1 tablet three times a day for at least two months, with the dose potentially reduced if symptoms improve.
• Threatened premature delivery: Dosage is determined individually, with high doses (up to 40 mg daily) sometimes used.

It is usually taken orally and can be taken with or without food. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, and the regular dosing schedule should be continued. A double dose is not recommended.

Side Effects: Treatment with Gestrenol, especially long-term, may cause some gastrointestinal issues such as:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Epigastric discomfort (upper abdominal pain)

Other potential side effects mentioned in the broader context of progestogens can include headache, menstrual disorders, and breast pain.

Precautions: Gestrenol is contraindicated in certain conditions, including:

• Hypersensitivity to allylestrenol or any of its components.
• Thrombophlebitis (inflammation of a vein with blood clot formation).
• Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.
• Incomplete abortion.
• Hormone-dependent carcinoma (cancer).
• Severe hepatic (liver) impairment.
• It should not be used as a diagnostic test for pregnancy.

Caution should be exercised in patients with pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, congestive heart failure, sick sinus syndrome, coronary artery disease, seizures, epilepsy, renal dysfunction, migraine headaches, or respiratorydiseases like asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or COPD.

The use of Gestrenol during breastfeeding is generally not recommended as it may pass into breast milk and could affect the nursing infant.

It may interact with certain drugs, including enzyme-inducing drugs like carbamazepine, griseofulvin, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and rifampicin, as well as ketoconazole.

Storage: Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
