Gliclid 80

Presentation:

Gliclid 80 is available as tablets containing 80 mg of gliclazide for oral administration. The tablets may be scored for dose adjustment, as specified on the product packaging.

Indications:

Gliclid 80 is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone have not been adequate to achieve satisfactory glycemic control. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin.  

Dosage and Administration:

The usual starting dose is 40-80 mg daily. The dosage may be adjusted based on the patient's blood glucose response, with increases usually made at intervals of one to two weeks. The maximum recommended daily dose is 320 mg, which may be given as a single dose or in divided doses, preferably before meals. The specific dosage and administration should be determined and adjusted by a healthcare professional based on individual patient needs and regular blood glucose monitoring.

Side Effects:

The most common side effect associated with gliclazide is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can occur due to missed meals, strenuous exercise, or when used with other hypoglycemic agents. Symptoms may include sweating, dizziness, confusion, tremor, hunger, and palpitations.

Other possible side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. Skin reactions like rash, itching, and urticaria have also been reported. Less frequent side effects may involve changes in blood counts or liver function.

Precautions:

Before taking Gliclid 80, inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially kidney or liver problems, and any allergies. Caution should be exercised in elderly patients and those with conditions that may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Gliclid 80 is contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, and severe renal or hepatic impairment. It is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  

Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements, as they may interact with gliclazide, affecting blood glucose control or increasing the risk of side effects. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential during treatment. Avoid alcohol consumption as it can unpredictably alter blood glucose control.  

Storage:

Store Gliclid 80 tablets below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep the medication out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date mentioned on the packaging.
