Presentation: Tablets containing 3 mg glimepiride. Various strengths may be available.
Indications: Indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, as an adjunct to diet and exercise, when blood glucose cannot be adequately controlled by diet and exercise alone. May be used alone or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin.
Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose is 1 mg once daily, taken with breakfast or the first main meal. Dosage may be increased gradually based on blood glucose levels, usually in increments of 1 mg or 2 mg at 1-2 week intervals, up to a maximum daily dose of 8 mg. Follow physician's instructions regarding dosage and timing. Swallow tablets whole; do not crush or chew.
Side Effects: The most common side effect is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), the risk of which may be increased in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function, elderly patients, those who miss meals, or those taking certain other medications. Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include sweating, tremor, anxiety, confusion, dizziness, and palpitations. Other potential side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation), skin reactions (rash, itching, urticaria), and rarely, changes in blood counts or liver function. Weight gain may also occur.
Precautions: Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, elderly patients, and those with a risk of hypoglycemia. Regular blood glucose monitoring is essential. Avoid or minimize alcohol consumption. Certain medications can interact with glimepiride, affecting blood glucose control. Use during pregnancy is generally not recommended and should be avoided. Breastfeeding is contraindicated.
Storage: Store below 30°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
