Glucozid

Presentation:Each tablet typically contains 80 mg of gliclazide.

Indications: Glucozid is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone are not adequate to control blood glucose levels.

Dosage and Administration: The initial usual dose is 40-80 mg once daily, taken orally before a meal (preferably breakfast). The dosage may be adjusted gradually based on blood glucose response, with the maximum recommended daily dose being 320 mg, which may be given as a single dose or in divided doses. For modified-release formulations (Glucozid MR), the usual starting dose is 30 mg once daily at breakfast, which can be titrated up to a maximum of 120 mg once daily. Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and should not be crushed or chewed.Dosage should be individualized by the physician based on the patient's needs.

Side Effects: The most common side effect is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can manifest as sweating, dizziness, tremor, anxiety, increased heart rate, and confusion. Other possible side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.Less common side effects may include headache,weight gain, and allergic skin reactions.

Precautions: Glucozid is contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal or hepatic impairment, and known hypersensitivity to gliclazide or other sulfonylureas or sulfonamides. Caution should be exercised in patients with moderate renal or hepatic impairment, elderly patients, and those with risk factors for hypoglycemia (e.g., malnutrition, irregular meals, strenuous exercise, alcohol consumption, concomitant use of other hypoglycemic agents). Regular blood glucose monitoring is necessary.
