Hypertonic NaCl 3% Solution N.C.C 35ml

Presentation: A sterile, hypertonic solution of Sodium Chloride 3% in water for injection. Available in a 35ml bottle, manufactured by Nazifa Chemical Corporation (N.C.C.) in Bangladesh. This small volume suggests it is likely intended for a specific use, such as inhalation via nebulizer or possibly for a very controlled intravenous administration in specific circumstances.

Indications:

  • Nebulization: Commonly used to help clear thick mucus in respiratory conditions like bronchiolitis, cystic fibrosis, COPD, and severe cough associated with the common cold. The hypertonic solution helps to draw water into the airways, thinning the mucus and making it easier to cough up.
  • Severe Symptomatic Hyponatremia: In critical care settings, under strict medical supervision and often via a central line, hypertonic saline (including 3%) may be used for the rapid correction of severely low sodium levels (hyponatremia) that are causing neurological symptoms (e.g., seizures, confusion, coma). This use requires careful monitoring and is typically not for routine outpatient use.
  • Increased Intracranial Pressure: May be used in the management of increased intracranial pressure due to conditions like traumatic brain injury or cerebral edema, under specialized medical care.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Nebulization: Typically, the entire 35ml vial is used in a nebulizer as directed by a physician or respiratory therapist. The frequency and duration of nebulization depend on the individual's condition and response.
  • Intravenous Use: If used intravenously for severe hyponatremia or increased intracranial pressure, the dosage and rate of infusion are highly individualized and must be strictly controlled by a physician experienced in managing these conditions, often in an intensive care setting with continuous monitoring of serum sodium levels and neurological status. This formulation in a 35ml vial is less common for large-volume intravenous fluid replacement.

Side Effects:

  • Nebulization: May cause temporary chest tightness, wheezing, cough, or sore throat. If these occur, a bronchodilator (reliever) medication may be needed.
  • Intravenous Use: Rapid correction of hyponatremia can lead to serious neurological complications, including osmotic demyelination syndrome. Too rapid infusion can also cause fluid overload, pulmonary edema, and electrolyte imbalances (hypernatremia, hyperchloremia). Infusion site reactions like pain, irritation, or phlebitis are possible.

Precautions:

  • Nebulization: Use with caution in patients with asthma or hyperreactive airways, as it may trigger bronchospasm. Pre-treatment with a bronchodilator may be necessary.
  • Intravenous Use: Must be administered with extreme caution and under close monitoring, especially in patients at risk for rapid sodium changes, fluid overload (e.g., heart failure, renal insufficiency), or electrolyte imbalances. Rapid correction of hyponatremia should be avoided.
  • General: Consult a doctor before using this solution, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions or are taking other medications.

Storage: Store at room temperature, away from excessive heat. Keep out of reach of children. The single-use vial should be used immediately after opening, and any remaining solution should be discarded.
