Ibancal Kit
Presentation: Each kit contains 1 tablet of Ibandronic Acid 150 mg (as Ibandronate Sodium Monohydrate INN) and 60 tablets of Calcium Orotate 400 mg (as Calcium Orotate Dihydrate INN). The tablets are typically packaged in a user-friendly calendar blister pack to aid in adherence.
Indications: Ibancal Kit is indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is also used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in men.Ibandronic Acid, a bisphosphonate, works by slowing bone loss, increasing bone mineral density, and reducing the risk of fractures, particularly vertebral fractures. The Calcium Orotate component provides supplemental calcium, which is essential for maintaining healthy bones.
Dosage and Administration:
- Ibandronic Acid: One 150 mg tablet is taken orally once a month, preferably on the same date each month. It must be taken on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before the first food, drink (other than plain water), or any other oral medications or supplements, including calcium. To aid in delivery to the stomach and minimize esophageal irritation, the tablet should be swallowed whole with a full glass of plain water while the patient is standing or sitting upright, and the patient should not lie down for 60 minutes afterwards.
- Calcium Orotate: Typically, two 400 mg tablets are taken daily in divided doses (e.g., one in the morning and one in the evening), starting the day after taking the Ibandronic Acid tablet and continuing throughout the month. The dosage may be adjusted based on individual calcium needs.
Side Effects:
- Ibandronic Acid: Common side effects may include gastrointestinal issues such as dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Musculoskeletal side effects like arthralgia, back pain, and myalgia may also occur, as well as headache and flu-like symptoms. Less common but potentially serious side effects include esophageal problems.
- Calcium Orotate: Common side effects are generally mild and may include gastrointestinal discomfort such as bloating or constipation. In rare cases, high doses may lead to hypercalcemia or kidney stones.
Precautions:
- Ibandronic Acid: Contraindicated in patients with hypocalcemia, known hypersensitivity to ibandronic acid or other bisphosphonates, and certain esophageal abnormalities. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is important. Renal function should be assessed prior to treatment.
- Calcium Orotate: Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, and kidney stones. Caution should be exercised in patients with renal impairment or conditions predisposing to hypercalcemia.
- Drug Interactions: Absorption of Ibandronic Acid can be reduced by calcium-containing products and other multivalent cations. These should be taken at least 60 minutes after Ibandronic Acid. Calcium supplements may interact with certain medications; consult a healthcare professional regarding other medications being taken.
Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Follow the specific storage instructions provided on the product packaging.
