Presentation:Each tablet contains 850 mg of metformin hydrochloride.
Indications: Informet 850 is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It may be used as monotherapy orin combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or with insulin.It is also indicated for use in children aged 10 years and older and adolescents as monotherapy or in combination with insulin for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Dosage and Administration:The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg twice daily or 850 mg once daily, given with meals.Dosage increases should be made gradually in increments of 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every 2 weeks, up to a maximum of 2550 mg per day, given in divided doses. For children aged 10 years and older and adolescents, the usual starting dose is 500 mg twice daily, given with meals. Dosage may be increased gradually up to a maximum of 2000 mg per day, given in divided doses. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not crushed, cut, or chewed.Dosage should be individualized based on effectiveness and tolerability. Renal function should be assessed prior to initiation and periodically thereafter.
Side Effects:Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.These are often transient and may decrease over time. Less common side effects include taste disturbance. Prolonged use may lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency.Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious potential side effect requiring immediate medical attention.
Precautions:Informet 850 is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), acute metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, and known hypersensitivity to metformin.It is not recommended in patients with hepatic impairment, acute alcohol intoxication, or conditions associated with tissue hypoxia.Caution should be exercised in patients with moderate renal impairment and in elderly patients. Alcohol consumption should be avoided or limited. Temporary discontinuation of Informet 850 may be necessary before or at the time of iodinated contrast imaging procedures or surgery.
