Indications: Iracet, containing levetiracetam, is indicated as:
- Monotherapy:In the treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization in adults and adolescentsfrom 16 years of age with newly diagnosed epilepsy.
- Adjunctive therapy:
- In the treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalizationin adults, adolescents, children, and infants from 1 month of age with epilepsy.
- In the treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy.
- In the treatment of primary generalizedtonic-clonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with Idiopathic GeneralizedEpilepsy.
Dosage and Administration: Iracet can be administered orally as tablets or solution. The dosage depends on the indication, age, weight, and renal function of the patient.
- Adults and adolescents (≥16 years): The usual starting dose is 500 mg twice daily. The dose can be adjusted based on clinical response and tolerability, with a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg.
- Children: Dosage is weight-based for younger children and may vary by age. Oral solution is often preferred for infants and young children.
- Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustment is required in patients with impaired renal function, based on creatinine clearance.
Side Effects:
- Very Common: Somnolence, asthenia (weakness), headache.
- Common: Dizziness, fatigue, aggression, irritability, anxiety, depression, nervousness, ataxia (lack of coordination), tremor, amnesia, convulsion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, diplopia (double vision), blurred vision, infection, nasopharyngitis, cough, rash.
- Rare: Suicidal thoughts or behavior, behavioral changes, psychotic disorders, pancytopenia, leukopenia, neutropenia.
Precautions:
- Use with caution in patients with renal impairment; dosage adjustment may be necessary.
- Levetiracetam may cause drowsiness and dizziness, affecting the ability to drive or operate machinery.
- Monitor patients for signs of depression and/or suicidal ideation and behavior.
- Inform the doctor about any existing medical conditions and all other medications being taken.
- Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be considered only if clearly needed and under medical supervision.
