Iracet XR 500

Presentation:Extended-release tablets containing 500 mg levetiracetam.

Indications:Indicated as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of:  

• Partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization in adults and children4 years of age and older with epilepsy. 
• Myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. 
• Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures inadults and children 6 years of age and older with idiopathic generalized epilepsy.  

Mayalso be used as monotherapy in certain patients with partial-onset seizures.

Dosage and Administration: Dosage is individualized based on age, weight, renal function, and the condition being treated. For extended-release formulations, the usual adult starting dose is 500 mg once daily. The dose may be increased every 2 weeks by 500 mg daily to a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg once daily. Adjustments are necessary in patients with impaired renal function; dosage should be reduced based on creatinine clearance. Can be taken with or without food. Follow physician's specific instructions.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include somnolence (sleepiness), asthenia (lack of energy), headache, dizziness, and accidental injury. Behavioral abnormalities such as irritability, agitation, depression, and aggression have been reported, particularly in pediatric patients.Patients and caregivers should be monitored for notable changes in behavior and mood.

Precautions: Use with caution in patients with pre-existing behavioral problems or psychiatric disorders. May cause somnolence and fatigue; patients should be advised not to drive or operate hazardous machinery until they are reasonably certain that levetiracetam does not affect them adversely.Gradual withdrawal is recommended to minimize the risk of increased seizure frequency.  

Storage:Store below 30°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.Keep out of reach of children.
