Indications

Itolux (Itopride Hydrochloride) is indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with chronic gastritis, including: 

• Feeling of an enlarged abdomen 
• Upper abdominal pain 
• Anorexia (loss of appetite) 
• Heartburn 
• Nausea and vomiting 

Pharmacology

Itopride Hydrochloride is a potent dopamine-2 antagonist and an acetylcholine esterase inhibitor. By inhibiting dopamine D2 receptors and acetylcholinesterase, it increases acetylcholine concentrations. This leads to increased gastrointestinal peristalsis, higher lower esophageal sphincter pressure, stimulated gastric motility, accelerated gastric emptying, and improved gastro-duodenal coordination. 

Dosage & Administration

• Adults: The usual oral dose is 50 mg, taken three times daily before meals. The dose may be reduced based on the patient's age and symptoms. 
• Elderly: Patients should be closely monitored due to their physiological hypo function and increased risk of adverse reactions. The dose may need to be reduced or the drug discontinued if adverse reactions occur. 
• Pediatric Population: The safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 have not been established, so its use is not recommended in this group. 

Interaction

• Anticholinergic Drugs: Co-administration with anticholinergic drugs (e.g., Tiquizium bromide, Scopolamine butyl bromide) should be done with care. Anticholinergic drugs inhibit gastrointestinal motility, which may reduce the effectiveness of Itolux. 

Contraindications

This preparation is contraindicated in patients with: 

• Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of its excipients. 
• Conditions where increased gastrointestinal motility could be harmful, such as gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation. 

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of Itopride Hydrochloride in pregnancy has not been verified. It should only be used in pregnant women if the therapeutic benefits clearly outweigh the possible risks. It is not recommended for breastfeeding women due to a lack of data on its excretion in human milk. 

Precautions & Warnings

• Caution: Use with caution as it enhances the action of acetylcholine. 
• Continuous Use: Do not use continuously for an extended period if there is no improvement in symptoms. 
• Anaphylactoid Reactions: Close observation is needed, as shock and anaphylactoid reactions can occur. 
• Hepatic Disorder: Hepatic function disorder and jaundice may occur, and patients should be closely monitored. The drug should be discontinued if abnormalities are found. 
• PTP Packaging: Patients should be instructed to remove the tablet from the press-through package (PTP) before swallowing to prevent injury to the esophageal mucosa. 

Overdose Effects

In the case of an overdose, standard measures like gastric lavage and symptomatic therapy should be applied. 

Therapeutic Class

Itolux is classified as an osmotic purgative.
