Kilbac 500 is a brand name for tablets containing Cefuroxime Axetil , equivalent to 500 mg of Cefuroxime.  

Here's what you should know about Kilbac 500:

Presentation:

  • Each film-coated tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil USP equivalent to Cefuroxime 500 mg.  
  • Usually available in strips of 4 tablets.  

Indications: Kilbac (Cefuroxime) is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis  
  • Acute bacterial otitis media  
  • Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis  
  • Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia and bronchitis  
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections  
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections  
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhea  
  • Early Lyme disease  
  • Bone and joint infections  
  • Septicemia
  • Meningitis  
  • Surgical prophylaxis  

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Kilbac 500 depends on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age, weight, and kidney function. Always follow your doctor's prescription.   

Typical adult dosages may include:

  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 250 mg twice daily for 5-10 days.  
  • Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis: 250 mg twice daily for 10 days.  
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 250- 500 mg twice daily for 10 days.  
  • Secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days.  
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections: 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days.  
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections: 250 mg twice daily for 7-10 days.  
  • Uncomplicated Gonorrhea: 1000 mg as a single dose.  
  • Community-acquired pneumonia: 250-500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days.  
  • Early Lyme disease: 500 mg twice daily for 20 days.  

Kilbac 500 tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and can be taken with or without food.  

Pharmacology: Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to essential target proteins. It is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including many beta-lactamase-producing strains.  

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea, vomiting  
  • Headache, dizziness  
  • Increased chances of fungal infections  
  • Stomach pain  
  • Raised liver enzymes or white blood cells  

Less common but potentially serious side effects can occur. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any severe or persistent side effects.

Precautions:

  • Inform your doctor if you have any allergies, especially to cefuroxime or other cephalosporins, penicillins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of colitis or kidney problems. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in patients with impaired kidney function.
  • Be cautious while driving as it may cause dizziness.  

Pregnancy & Lactation: Kilbac 500 is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. However, it should be used only if clearly needed. Cefuroxime passes into breast milk in small quantities. Caution should be exercised when administering to a nursing woman.   

Storage: Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
