Lamitrin 50

Presentation: Each tablet contains Lamotrigine 50 mg.

Indications: Lamitrin is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Epilepsy:
    • Adjunctive therapy in patients aged 2 years and older for partial-onset seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and generalized seizures of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
    • Monotherapy in patients aged 16 years and older for conversion to monotherapy in patients with partial-onset seizures who are receiving treatment with certain other antiepileptic drugs.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder in adults (18 years and older) to delay the time to occurrence of mood episodes (depression, mania, hypomania, mixed episodes) in patients treated for acute moodsymptoms with standard therapy.

Dosage and Administration: Dosage must be individualized and is usually initiated at a low dose, with gradual titration to a maintenance dose. The specific dosage and titration schedule depend on factors such as:

  • The condition being treated (epilepsy or bipolar disorder).
  • Whether Lamitrin is used as monotherapy or with other medications.
  • Other medications the patient is taking (some drugs can interact with lamotrigine).

It is crucial to follow the physician's instructions precisely regarding the dosage and schedule. Lamitrin tablets should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, diplopia (double vision), ataxia (lack of coordination), nausea, blurred vision, somnolence (drowsiness), rhinitis (stuffy nose), pharyngitis (sore throat), and rash.
  • Serious side effects can occur, including severe skin rashes (such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis), which can be life-threatening. It is important to seek immediate medical attention if a rash develops, especially if accompanied by fever, blistering, peeling skin, or sores in the mouth or around the eyes. Other serious side effects may include suicidal thoughts or actions, blood disorders, and aseptic meningitis.

Precautions:

  • Skin Rash: Discontinue Lamitrin at the first sign of a rash unless the rash is clearly not drug-related.
  • Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior:Monitor patients for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and/or any unusual3changes in mood or behavior.
  • Blood Dyscrasias: Monitor for signs and symptoms of blood disorders.
  • Aseptic Meningitis: Be alert for signs and symptoms of meningitis.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Lamotrigine may cause fetal harm if administered during pregnancy. It is excreted in breast milk and may cause adverse effects in nursing infants. Discuss with your doctor before using Lamitrin if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Drug Interactions: Lamotrigine can interact with several other medications, including valproate, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, and oral contraceptives. Inform your physician of all medications you are taking.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: Lamotrigine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision. Patients should be cautioned about operating hazardous machinery, including automobiles, until they are reasonably certain4that Lamitrin does not affect them adversely.
