Laxolac 100

Presentation:Laxolac 100ml is an oral solution containing Lactulose BP at a concentration of 3.35 gm per 5 ml.It is available in 100 ml bottles. 

Indications:Laxolac (Lactulose) is indicated for the treatment of constipation (both chronic and occasional).It is also used in the management of hepatic encephalopathy (portal-systemic encephalopathy) to reduce blood ammonia levels.  

Dosage and Administration:The dosage of Laxolac depends on the condition being treated and the patient's age.It can be taken with or without food.

• Constipation:
  • Adults: Initially 15-30 ml once daily, may be increased to 60 ml daily if needed. For maintenance, 15-30 ml daily is usually sufficient.
  • Children (7-14 years): Initially 10-15 ml once daily.In long-term therapy, the usual dose is 5-10 ml daily, adjusted according to response.
  • Children (1-6 years): 5-10 ml daily in single or divided doses.
  • Infants under 1 year: 2.5-5 ml daily in single or divided doses.
• Hepatic Encephalopathy:
  • Adults: Initially 30-50 ml three times daily. Dosage is adjusted to produce 2-3 soft stools per day.  

It may take 24-48 hours to produce a bowel movement.It is important to drink plenty of fluids while taking Laxolac.  

Side Effects:Common side effects may include flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and cramps, particularly at the start of treatment.These usually subside with continued use or dose reduction. High doses may lead to diarrhea and electrolyte imbalance.  

Precautions:Laxolac (Lactulose) is contraindicated in patients with galactosemia (a rare genetic disorder) and intestinal obstruction.It should be used with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus as it contains small amounts of other sugars.Do not give Laxolac to children under the age of 14 unless their doctor has advised it.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:Lactulose is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.However, it is always advisable to consult a healthcareprofessional before using anymedication during these periods.

Storage:Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and heat.Keep out of reach of children.
