Levipil 500
Presentation: Each film-coated tablet contains 500 mg of levetiracetam.
Indications: Levipil 500 is indicated as:
- Monotherapy:In the treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization in adults and adolescentsfrom 16 years of age with newly diagnosed epilepsy.
- Adjunctive therapy:
- In the treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalizationin adults, adolescents, children, and infants from 1 month of age with epilepsy.
- In the treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy.
- In the treatment of primary generalizedtonic-clonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with Idiopathic GeneralizedEpilepsy.
Dosage and Administration:Levipil 500 tablets are for oral administration and should be swallowed whole with liquid.It can be taken with or without food.The dosage depends on the indication, age, weight, and renal function of the patient.
- Monotherapy for partial-onset seizures (adults and adolescents from 16 years): The recommended starting dose is 500 mg twice daily. The dose can be increased every 2 weeks by 500 mg twice daily to a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg (1500 mg twice daily).
- Adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures (adults and adolescents from 12 to 17 years weighing 50 kg or more): The initial therapeutic dose is 500 mg twice daily. The dose can be increased every 2 weeks by 500 mg twice daily to a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg (1500 mg twice daily).
- Adjunctive therapy for myoclonic seizures (adults and adolescents from 12 years): The recommended starting dose is 500 mg twice daily. The dose can be increased every 2 weeks by 500 mg twice daily to a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg (1500 mg twice daily).
- Adjunctive therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (adults and adolescents from 12 years): The recommended starting dose is 500 mg twice daily. The dose can be increased every 2 weeks by 500 mg twice daily to a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg (1500 mg twice daily).
- Children and infants: Dosage is based on weight and age, and a physician will determine the appropriate dose.
Renal function should be assessed before initiating Levipil and dosage adjustments may be necessary in patients with impaired renal function.
Side Effects:
- Very Common: Somnolence, headache.
- Common: Nasopharyngitis, anorexia, depression, hostility, agitation, nervousness, irritability, convulsions, dizziness, fatigue.
- Uncommon: Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, weight decrease, weight increase, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, psychotic disorder, abnormal behavior, anxiety, insomnia, amnesia, impaired coordination, tremor, paresthesia, vertigo, diplopia, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, asthenia/fatigue.
- Rare: Pancytopenia, hepatic failure, hepatitis, hyponatremia.
Precautions:
Levipil 500 should be used with caution in patients with:
- Renal impairment: Dosage adjustment is required.
- Hepatic impairment.
- History of depression or suicidal ideation: Monitor for changes in mood and behavior.
- Elderly patients: Dosage adjustment may be necessary due to age-related decline in renal function.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and under medical supervision.
Abrupt discontinuation of Levipil should be avoided as it may lead to an increase in seizure frequency.
Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, as interactionsmay occur.
Storage:Store below 30°C, protected from moisture.Keep out of reach of children.
