Presentation:Tablets containing linagliptin 5 mg and metformin hydrochloride in an extended-release formulation.Various strengths of metformin (e.g., 500 mg, 1000 mg) may be combined with 5 mg of linagliptin; refer to the packaging for the specific strength of metformin.

Indications:Indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellituswhen treatment with both linagliptin and metformin is appropriate.  

Dosage and Administration:The dosageis individualized based on the patient's current regimen, glycemic control, and tolerability. Lijenta-MX is typically taken once daily with a meal, preferably in the morning. The available strengths combine 5 mg of linagliptin with different doses of extended-release metformin. The maximum daily dose of linagliptin is 5 mg and the maximum daily dose of metformin is 2000 mg. Contraindicated in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 45 mL/min/1.73 m². Assess renal function prior to initiation and periodically thereafter. Swallow tablets whole; do not crush, cut, or chew. Follow physician's instructions.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headache associated with metformin. Linagliptin is generally well-tolerated; however, potential side effects include nasopharyngitis and hypoglycemia (when used with sulfonylureas or insulin). Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious side effect associated with metformin.  

Precautions:Contraindicated in moderate to severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, dialysis, metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), and hypersensitivity to linagliptin or metformin.Use with caution in patients with risk factors for lactic acidosis (e.g., excessive alcohol use, hepatic impairment, hypoxic states) and heart failure. Assess renal function before initiation and periodically thereafter.

Storage:Store below 30°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.Keep out of reach of children.
