Presentation: Each tablet contains Glimepiride INN 2 mg and Metformin Hydrochloride BP 500 mg. Available in strips.
Indications: Limaryl M is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus whentreatment with both glimepiride and metformin is appropriate.2It may be used as initial therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus whose hyperglycemia is not adequately controlled by diet and exercise. It can also be used to replace prior combination therapy of glimepiride and metformin.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage should be individualized based on the patient's current regimen, glycemic control, and tolerability, not exceeding the maximum recommended daily dose of glimepiride 8 mg and metformin 2000 mg. Usually taken once or twice daily with meals.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and headache. Metformin may also cause metallic taste. Less common but potentially serious side effects include lactic acidosis (symptoms include unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, feeling cold, and feeling very weak or tired) and liver problems. Glimepiride can cause allergic reactions such as rash and itching. Long-term use of metformin may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency.
Precautions: Limaryl M is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, and known hypersensitivity to glimepiride, metformin, other sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides. Not recommended to initiate treatment in patients with eGFR between 30-45 mL/min/1.73 m². Use with caution in patients with moderate renal impairment, liver disease, heart failure, and in elderly individuals. Temporary discontinuation of metformin may be required for surgical procedures or radiological examinations involving iodinated contrast media. Avoid excessive alcohol intake. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, as drug interactions can occur. Monitor blood glucose levels regularly. Be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia and know how to treat it.
