Litiam ER

Presentation: Extended-release tablets containing Lithium Carbonate in various strengths (e.g., 300mg, 400mg).

Indications: Treatment of manic episodes of bipolar disorder. Maintenance therapy to prevent or lessen the intensity of subsequent episodes in patients with a history of mania.

Dosage & Administration: Dosage is highly individualized and determined by your doctor based on serum lithium levels and clinical response.

• Adults: Initial doses typically range from 900 mg to 1800 mg per day, usually divided into two or three doses for extended-release formulations.
• Maintenance: Usual maintenance doses range from 900 mg to 1200 mg per day.
• Take consistently with or without food, but maintaining a consistent relationship to meals is generally recommended.
• Swallow tablets whole; do not crush or chew.
• Adequate fluid and salt intake should be maintained, especially during initial stabilization.
• Regular blood tests to monitor lithium levels are crucial.

Side Effects: Side effects are related to lithium levels and individual sensitivity.

• Common: Mild nausea, diarrhea, increased thirst, increased urination, fine hand tremor, fatigue, muscle weakness.
• Less Common: Dizziness, dry mouth, metallic taste, weight gain, memory problems, hair thinning.
• Serious (requiring immediate medical attention): Vomiting, severe diarrhea, coarse tremor, confusion, drowsiness, slurred speech, blurred vision, uncoordinated movements, seizures, irregular heartbeat, signs of allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing).

Precautions: Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

• Kidney disease
• Heart disease
• Thyroid problems
• Low sodium levels (e.g., due to dehydration, low-salt diet)
• Epilepsy or history of seizures
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding
• Brugada Syndrome or a family history of it.

Lithium can interact with many medications. Inform your doctor of all other medications you are taking. Avoid significant changes in salt intake. Stay well-hydrated.
