Indications:Lozide 80 (gliclazide) is an oral hypoglycemic agent belonging to the sulfonylurea group. It is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone have not been adequate to control blood glucose levels.Gliclazide stimulates the release of insulin from the beta cells of the pancreas and may also have extrapancreatic effects.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Lozide 80 is individualized and depends on the patient's blood glucose levels and response to treatment. It is administered orally. The usual initial dose is 40-80 mg daily, taken before the main meal (usually breakfast). The dose may be increased gradually, based on blood glucose monitoring, up to a maximum of 320 mg daily, which can be taken as a single dose or in divided doses. It is important to take Lozide 80 at the same time each day and to follow the dietary advice provided by your doctor.
Side Effects:The most common side effect of gliclazide is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can occur if meals are delayed or missed, if excessive exercise is undertaken, or if it is taken with other antidiabetic agents.Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include sweating, paleness, tremor, anxiety, unusual tiredness or weakness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, hunger, and visual disturbances.Other possible side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation), headache, dizziness, and skin reactions (rash, itching, urticaria).
Precautions: Lozide 80 is contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal or hepatic impairment, and known hypersensitivity to sulfonylureas. It should be used with caution in elderly or debilitated patients, and in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function, as they may be more susceptible to hypoglycemia. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can potentiate the hypoglycemic effect. During periods of stress, such as fever, trauma, or surgery, a temporary change to insulin therapy may be necessary. Care should be taken when co-administering with other drugs that can affect blood glucose levels.
Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
