Lubigut

Presentation: Each capsule of Lubigut contains Lubiprostone INN 8 mcg or 24 mcg.

Indications: Lubigut (Lubiprostone) is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) in adults.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C) in women.
  • Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non-cancer pain.

Lubiprostone is a selective type 2 chloride channel (ClC-2) activator. By increasing fluid secretion in the intestine, it promotes bowel movements, helps soften stool, and can relieve symptoms of constipation such as straining and abdominal discomfort.

Dosage and Administration: Lubigut capsules should be swallowed whole and can be taken with or without food.

  • Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) in adults: The recommended dosage is 24 mcg twice daily.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C) in women: The recommended dosage is 8 mcg twice daily.
  • Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non-cancer pain: The recommended dosage is 24 mcg twice daily.

The dosage may be adjusted by the physician based on individual patient response and tolerability. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose, in which case the missed dose should be skipped.Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Side Effects: The most common side effects reported with Lubigut include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headache
  • Abdominal distension
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence

Other less common side effects may occur. Nausea is often dose-related and may decrease with continued treatment. Taking Lubigut with food may help reduce nausea in some patients. If side effects are persistent or bothersome, patients should consult their doctor.

Precautions: Lubigut (Lubiprostone) is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected mechanical bowel obstruction. Caution should be exercised in patients with severe hepatic impairment, and a lower starting dose may be considered. Patients who experience severe diarrhoea should be monitored for dehydration and treated accordingly.

Lubiprostone has not been studied in children and adolescents.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: There are limited data on the use of Lubiprostone in pregnant women. Based on animal studies, there may be a risk to the foetus. Lubigut should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. It is not known whetherLubiprostone is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when administering Lubigut to a breastfeeding woman.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
