Magnolax

Presentation: Magnolax is an emulsion containing Liquid Paraffin BP and Magnesium Hydroxide BP.

Indications: Magnolax is indicated for the temporary relief of constipation. It works by softening the faeces (Liquid Paraffin) and increasing the water content in the intestines, which stimulates bowel movement (Magnesium Hydroxide). It may also be used to relieve discomfort associated with straining during bowel movements in conditions like anorectal disorders and post-operative constipation. In some instances, it might be used for constipation associated with other conditions like chronic cholecystitis or hernia.

Dosage and Administration: Magnolax emulsion is for oral administration. Shake the bottle well before use. The usual dosage is:

  • Adults: 15-30 ml before breakfast or at bedtime.
  • Children (over 7 years): 7.5-15 ml at bedtime.
  • Children (3-7 years): 5-10 ml at bedtime.

The dose may be mixed with milk or half a glass of water if desired. It is important to follow the recommended dosage and not to take it for more than one week unless under medical supervision.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Magnolax may include:

  • Anal irritation (with excessive dose) and seepage of liquid paraffin.
  • Potassium loss (symptoms may include thirst, weakness, nausea, and diarrhoea).
  • Stomach ache and cramps.
  • Nausea or, rarely, vomiting.
  • Rectal itching.

Prolonged use may lead to dependence on laxatives.

Precautions: Magnolax should be used with caution in patients with:

  • Renal and hepatic impairment.
  • Existing electrolyte imbalance.
  • Acute abdominal conditions like abdominal pain, appendicitis symptoms, or acute surgical abdomen.
  • Difficulty swallowing or impaired neurodevelopment (oral liquid paraffin is not recommended in these patients due to the risk of aspiration).
  • Not recommended for prolonged use.
  • Maintain adequate fluid intake during treatment.

It is generally considered safe for pregnant and lactating mothers, but medical advice should be sought before use. Magnolax may interact with certain medications, including Cimetidine, Diuretics, Famotidine, and Ranitidine, potentially causing irritation of the stomach or bowel.

Storage: Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
