Mecolagin 0.5 is a chewable tablet containing 0.5 mg (500 micrograms) of Mecobalamin, which is an active form of Vitamin B12. It is manufactured by Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh.
Indications:
Mecolagin 0.5 is indicated for the treatment of:
- Peripheral neuropathies of various origins, including:
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Vertebral syndrome
- Nerve compression syndrome
- Multiple sclerosis
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Parkinson's disease
- Alzheimer'sdisease
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Entrapment neuropathy
- Drug-induced neuropathy
- Lumbago
- Intercostal neuralgia
- Bell's palsy
- Megaloblastic anemia due to Vitamin B12 deficiency (primarily the injection form, but the tablet may have a role in maintenance).
Dosage and Administration:
The usual adult dosage is one 0.5 mg tablet three times daily.
- The dosage should be adjusted according to the patient's age and the severity of symptoms.
- Place the tablet in the mouth and allow it to dissolve, then swallow.
- It is mentioned that Mecobalamin is better absorbed on an empty stomach, so it might be preferable to take it in the morning before the first meal or at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal.
- Use in children is not recommended.
Side Effects:
Generally, Mecolagin is well tolerated. However, a few side effects like:
- Gastrointestinal discomfort (including anorexia, nausea, or diarrhea)
- Rash
may be seen after administration.
Precautions:
- The medicine should not be used for months if there is no response at all after its use for a certain period of time.
- Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.
- Use in children is not recommended.
- Absorption of Vitamin B12 from the gastrointestinal tract may be reduced by neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, H2-blockers, omeprazole, and colchicine.
- Serum concentrations may be decreased by the use of oral contraceptives.
- Parenteral chloramphenicol may reduce the effects in anemia.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Mecobalamin or any other components of the formulation.
Storage:
- Store at room temperature.
