Melixol Tablet - (500mcg + 10mg) contains a combination of two active ingredients:

  • Flupenthixol: 0.5 mg (500 micrograms)
  • Melitracen: 10 mg

Indications:

Melixol is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Apathy
  • Psychogenic depression
  • Depressive neuroses
  • Masked depression
  • Psychosomatic affections accompanied by anxiety and apathy
  • Menopausal depressions
  • Dysphoria and depression in alcoholics and drug addicts

Pharmacology:

  • Flupenthixol: It is a neuroleptic drug with anxiolytic and antidepressant properties at low doses. Its antipsychotic effect is achieved by blocking dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in the brain.
  • Melitracen: It is a tricyclic antidepressant that works by blocking the re-uptake of both serotonin and noradrenaline in the central nervous system, thus alleviating symptoms of depression.

Dosage and Administration:

The usual dosage for adults is 2 tablets per day, taken in the morning and at midday. In severe cases, the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.

For elderly patients, the usual dose is 1 tablet in the morning.

The maintenance dose is usually 1 tablet in the morning.

In cases of insomnia or severe restlessness, additional treatment with a sedative in the acute phase may be recommended.

Important Considerations:

  • Melixol may enhance the effects of alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants.
  • Simultaneous use with MAO inhibitors may cause hypertensive crises. It should not be given to patients who have received an MAO inhibitor within the last two weeks.
  • Neuroleptics and thymoleptics may reduce the antihypertensive effect of guanethidine and similar acting compounds. Thymoleptics may enhance the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline.
  • It is contraindicated in the immediate recovery phase after myocardial infarction, defects in bundle-branch conduction, untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, acute alcohol, barbiturate, and opiate intoxications, and in excitable or overactive patients.
  • Common side effects may include transient restlessness and insomnia.
  • It should preferably not be given during pregnancy and lactation.
