Met XR 500 

Presentation:Met XR 500 Tablet contains Metformin Hydrochloride BP 500 mgin an extended-release formulation.It is presented as a tablet for oral administration and is usually available in blister packs.The extended-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing and can help reduce gastrointestinal side effects.  

Indications:Met XR is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitusin adults, especially in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control.It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin. Metformin works by reducing glucose production in the liver, decreasing glucose absorption in the intestines, and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin.  

Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg once daily with the evening meal. Dosage may be increased gradually in increments of 500 mg weekly, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily with the evening meal, or alternatively, 1000 mg twice daily with meals. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, cut, or chewed. The dosage is determined by the physician based on individual needs and blood glucose control.

Side Effects:Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbancessuch as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominaldiscomfort, which are often transient and may be reduced by taking the medication with food and increasing the dose gradually. A metallic taste may also occur. Long-term use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. A rare but serious side effect is lactic acidosis, requiring immediate medical attention. Symptoms of lactic acidosis can include unusual tiredness, muscle pain, trouble breathing, and stomach pain.

Precautions: Met XR is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), and known hypersensitivity to metformin. Caution should be exercised in patients with moderate renal impairment (eGFR 30-45 mL/min/1.73 m²), heart failure, liver disease, and excessive alcohol intake. Renal function should be assessed before starting treatment and regularly thereafter.

Storage: Store Met XR 500 tablets below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
