Metfar 500 

Presentation:Metfar 500 Tablet contains Metformin Hydrochloride BP 500 mgas the active pharmaceutical ingredient.It is presented as a tablet for oral administration and is usually available in blister packs.  

Indications: Metfar is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise aloneare not sufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control. In adults, it can be used alone or with other antidiabetic medications or insulin.In children (over 10 years) and adolescents, it can be used alone or with insulin.Metformin helps lower blood glucose by reducing glucose production in the liver, decreasing glucose absorption in the intestines, and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin.  

Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose for adults is 500 mg once or twice daily taken with meals. The dosage may be gradually increased by 500 mg weekly or every two weeks based on blood glucose levels, up to a maximum of 2000-2550 mg per day in divided doses. For children (over 10 years and adolescents), the usual starting dose is 500 mg twice daily with meals, up to a maximum of 2000 mg per day in divided doses. Swallow the tablets whole, preferably with or after food to minimize stomach upset.

Side Effects: Common side effects include gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and loss of appetite, especially when starting treatment. A metallic taste may also occur. Long-term use can sometimes lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. A rare but serious side effect is lactic acidosis, which requires immediate medical attention.

Precautions:Metfar is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to metformin, severe kidney problems(eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), metabolic acidosis(including diabetic ketoacidosis), and sudden conditions that can affect kidney function (such as severe dehydration, serious infections, or shock).Use with caution in patients with heart failure, liver disease, and excessive alcohol intake. Kidney function should be checked before starting and regularly during treatment.

Storage:Store Metfar 500 tablets below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
