Metfar SR 500 

Presentation: Each sustained-release tablet of Metfar SR 500 contains 500 mg of Metformin Hydrochloride BP. 

Indications:Metfar SR (metformin hydrochloride) is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control.It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or with insulin.Metformin helps to lower blood glucose by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity.  

Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose of Metfar SR is 500 mg once daily with the evening meal. Dosage may be increased in increments of 500 mg weekly, up to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily with the evening meal.Some patients may benefit from 1000 mg twice daily taken with meals. The tablets should be swallowed whole and never crushed, cut, or chewed.Dosage should be individualized based on blood glucose levels and tolerability, following your doctor's specific instructions.

Side Effects:Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and flatulence, which are often transient, especially at the start of treatment.Long-term use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency.A rare but serious side effect is lactic acidosis, requiring immediate medical attention.  

Precautions:Metfar SR (metformin) is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), acute metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and known hypersensitivity to metformin.It is generally not recommended in patients with moderate renal impairment (eGFR 30-45 mL/min/1.73 m²). Caution should be exercised in patients with liver disease, heart failure, and excessive alcohol intake. Temporary discontinuation may be required before surgery or certain medical procedures involving iodinated contrast media.  

Storage:Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.Keep out of reach of children.
