Metfo 850

Presentation: Each Metfo 850 tablet contains 850 mg of metformin hydrochloride.

Indications:Metformin is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or with insulin.Metformin is also sometimes used to treat polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Dosage and Administration:The usual starting dose of metformin is either 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day, taken with meals.Dosage increases should be made gradually, usually in increments of 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every 2 weeks, up to a maximum daily dose of 2000-2550 mg, given in divided doses. Metfo 850 would typically be taken once daily at the start of treatment or twice daily as the dosage is increased. It is crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions on how and when to take Metfo 850. Taking it with meals can help reduce stomach or bowel side effects.Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water and do not crush or chew it.

Side Effects:The most common side effects of metformin are gastrointestinal, especially when starting treatment. These can include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite

These side effects are often temporary and may decrease as your body adjusts to the medication.Taking metformin with food and starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it can help minimize these effects.

Less common but more serious side effects include:

  • Lactic acidosis: A rare but serious condition where lactic acid builds up in the blood. Symptoms can include feeling very unwell, severe tiredness, fast or shallow breathing, and a slow heartbeat. This is a medical emergency.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency:Long-term use of metformin can lead to lower levels of vitamin B12.Your doctor may periodically check your vitamin B12 levels.

Precautions: Metformin is contraindicated in certain conditions, including:

  • Severe kidney disease (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²).
  • Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Known hypersensitivity to metformin.
  • Liver problems.
  • Severe infection.
  • Heart failure or recent heart attack with complications.
  • Dehydration.
  • Excessive alcohol intake.

Caution should be exercised in patients with moderate kidney impairment, the elderly, and those with conditions that could predispose them to kidney problems or lactic acidosis.Alcohol intake should be avoided or limited as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis.Metformin may need to be temporarily stopped before surgery or certain medical procedures involving iodinated contrast dyes.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
