Metryl 400 Tablet

Presentation:Film-coated tablets containing 400 mg of Metronidazole.Usually available in strips or blister packs.  

Indications:Metryl (Metronidazole) is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat various infections caused by susceptible bacteria and parasites. Common indications for Metryl 400 mg tablets include:   

• Urogenital trichomoniasis
• Bacterial vaginosis
• Amoebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal)
• Giardiasis
• Anaerobic bacterial infections such as:
  • Septicemia, bacteremia
  • Peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis
  • Post-operative wound infections
  • Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores
  • Acute dental infections
• Prevention of post-operative infectionsdue to anaerobic bacteria.  
• In combination with other medications for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori.  
• Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.

Dosage and Administration:The dosage of Metryl 400 mg depends on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and weight.Always follow your doctor's prescription.   

Typical adult dosages may include:

• Trichomoniasis: 200 mg three times daily for 7 days, or 400 mg twice daily for 7 days, or a single 2 g dose. The sexual partner should also be treated.
• Bacterial Vaginosis: 400 mg twice daily for 7 days, or a single 2 g dose.
• Amoebiasis: 400-800 mg three times daily for 5-10 days.
• Giardiasis: 2 g once daily for 3 days or 400 mg three times daily for 5-7 days.
• Anaerobic Infections: An initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg every 8 hours, or as directed by your doctor.
• Dental Infections: 200 mg three times daily for 3-7 days.

Metryl 400 mg tablets should be swallowed whole, usually with or after food to minimize stomach upset.

Pharmacology: Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent. Its active metabolites disrupt the DNA of susceptible microorganisms, leading to their death. It is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Metryl 400 mg tablets can include:

• Nausea, vomiting
• Diarrhea, abdominal cramps  
• Metallic taste
• Headache  
• Loss of appetite  
• Dry mouth  
• Darkening of urine  

Less common but potentially more serious side effects can occur.Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any severe side effects.   

Precautions:

• Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least 48 hours after stopping Metryl due to the risk of a disulfiram-like reaction.
• Inform your doctor about any liver disease, kidney disease, or neurological conditions.
• Metryl can interact with other medications, including blood thinners (like warfarin) and certain psychiatric medications. Always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.   

Pregnancy & Lactation: Metryl should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is generally not recommended during the first trimester. Metronidazole passes into breast milk. Breastfeeding is usually not recommended during treatment and for a period after stopping the medication. Consult your doctor.   

Storage: Store Metryl 400 mg tablets below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
