💊 Mexclav (Cefuroxime + Clavulanic Acid)
Mexclav is a powerful combination antibiotic. Cefuroxime kills bacteria, while Clavulanic Acid protects the medicine from being destroyed by resistant bacterial enzymes.
📋 Indications
Mexclav is used to treat various bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory: Sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, and bronchitis.
- Ear & Throat: Middle ear infections (otitis media).
- Urinary & Skin: UTIs and skin structure infections (like impetigo).
- Others: Bone and joint infections, Lyme disease, Typhoid fever, and Gonorrhea.
🥄 Dosage & Administration
Mexclav tablets can be taken with or without food. Typical adult doses (13+ years) include:
- General Infections: 250 mg twice daily for 5–10 days.
- Severe Infections/Pneumonia: 500 mg twice daily.
- Typhoid Fever: 500 mg twice daily for 10–14 days.
- Lyme Disease: 500 mg twice daily for 20 days.
- Children (3 months – 12 years): Dosing is weight-based (20–30 mg/kg/day) divided into two doses.
⚠️ Safety & Side Effects
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
- Contraindications: 🛑 Do not use if you are allergic to cephalosporins or have a history of Pseudomembranous Colitis.
- Interactions: Medicines that reduce stomach acid (like antacids) can lower the absorption of this antibiotic. Probenecid can increase the levels of Mexclav in your blood.

- Pregnancy: Generally safe in later pregnancy, but avoid in the first trimester unless necessary.
- Lactation: Small amounts pass into breast milk; monitor the infant for signs of sensitivity or diarrhea.
