Mez IV
Presentation: Mez IV is a brand name for Metronidazole intravenous infusion, available as a sterile solution containing Metronidazole 500 mg in 100 ml. It is usually supplied in glass bottles or plastic bags for intravenous administration. Mez IV is marketed by Renata PLC in Bangladesh.
Indications: Mez IV (Metronidazole) is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites, including:
Dosage and Administration: Mez IV is administered intravenously by a healthcare professional. The usual dosage for adults and children over 12 years is 500 mg infused intravenously every 8 hours at a rate of 5 ml/minute. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 4 g. Treatment duration is usually 7 days but may be extended based on the infection's severity. For surgical prophylaxis, it is usually administered shortly before surgery and continued for up to 24 hours post-operatively. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for children under 12 years and patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, and a metallic taste in the mouth. Less common side effects can include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, rashes, and dark or tea-coloured urine. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as peripheral neuropathy, seizures, and severe allergic reactions may occur.
Precautions: Mez IV (Metronidazole) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. It should be used with caution in patients with active central nervous system diseases, a history of blood dyscrasias, and severe hepatic impairment. Patients should be advised to avoid alcohol consumption during and for at least 48 hours after treatment due to the possibility of disulfiram-like reactions (abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, flushing). Metronidazole may interact with certain medications, including warfarin and lithium.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Metronidazole is classified as Pregnancy Category B. While animal studies have not shown a risk to the foetus, there are limited well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Metronidazole is excreted in human milk, and breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment and for 12-24 hours after the last dose.
Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
