ACME's Milk of Magnesia Plus contains:
- Magnesium Hydroxide BP: 300 mg per 5 ml (This acts as both an antacid and a laxative)
- Liquid Paraffin BP: 1.25 ml per 5 ml (This acts as a lubricant laxative to ease bowel movements)
Therefore, Milk of Magnesia Plus provides a dual action: magnesium hydroxide draws water into the bowel to stimulate movement, while liquid paraffin lubricates the stool for easier passage.
Indications:
- Constipation
- Hyperacidity with constipation
- Anorectal disorders
- Post-operative constipation
- Constipation associated with chronic cholecystitis
- Hernia (to avoid straining)
Dosage and Administration:
- Adults and Children over 12 years: 15 - 30 ml (3 - 6 teaspoonsful) before breakfast or at bedtime.
- Children 7 to 12 years: 7.5 â 15 ml (1.5 â 3 teaspoonsful) at bedtime. Â
- Children 3 â 7 years:5 â 10 ml (1 â 2 teaspoonsful) taken at bedtime. Â
- The dose may be taken with water or milk if necessary.
- It is important to drink sufficient fluids while taking this medication.
- Do not take for more than 1 week unless under doctor's supervision.
Contraindications:
- Acute gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain.
- Renal failure.
- Existing electrolyte imbalance.
- Symptoms of appendicitis.
- Acute surgical abdomen.
- Myocardial disease.
- Not recommended for use in patients with difficulty swallowing or impaired neurodevelopment (due to the liquid paraffin content and risk of aspiration).
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Irritation in the rectum (with excessive dose)
- Anal irritation and seepage
- Potassium deficiency (thirst, weakness, nausea, and diarrhea)
- Abdominal discomfort, pain, or cramps
Less common side effects associated with liquid paraffin can include foreign-body granulomatous reactions, vasospasm, and lipoid pneumonia (if aspirated).
Precautions and Warnings:
- Use with caution in patients with renal and hepatic dysfunction.
- Maintain sufficient liquid intake.
- May impair the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and possibly other compounds.
- Consult a doctor before use in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
- Use with caution in children, especially those under 12 years.
Drug Interactions:
Milk of Magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) can decrease the absorption of other drugs, including:
- Tetracycline antibiotics
- Digoxin
- Mycophenolate
- Phosphate supplements
- Certain azole antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole)
- Quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin)
- Cimetidine, diuretics, famotidine, and ranitidine may induce stomach or intestinal discomfort when taken with Milk of Magnesia Plus.
