My Zinc

Presentation: Tablets containing Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate BP equivalent to elemental Zinc. The strength of elemental Zinc per tablet can vary (e.g., 10 mg, 20 mg).

Ingredients: Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate BP. The amount of elemental Zinc per tablet will be specified on the packaging.

Indications: Indicated for the treatment and prevention of zinc deficiency. Zinc is an essential mineral involved in numerous bodily processes, including immune function, wound healing, protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, cell division, and a sense of taste and smell. It is used in conditions such as:

  • Zinc deficiency due to inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption, or increased loss.
  • Wilson's disease (in some formulations, to reduce copper absorption).
  • Acrodermatitis enteropathica.
  • As an adjunct in the treatment of diarrhea in children.
  • Wound healing.
  • Common cold (some evidence suggests it may reduce duration and severity).

Dosage and Administration: Dosage depends on the severity of the zinc deficiency and the age and weight of the individual.

  • For zinc deficiency: Adults and children over 10 years: typically 10-20 mg elemental zinc daily. Children under 10 years: usually 5-10 mg elemental zinc daily. Dosage should be determined by a physician.
  • For diarrhea in children: Dosage regimens vary, consult a healthcare professional.
  • Tablets are usually taken orally. It is often recommended to take zinc supplements with food to minimize stomach upset. However, avoid taking with foods or supplements high in calcium, as calcium can interfere with zinc absorption.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, especially at higher doses. A metallic taste in the mouth may also occur.

Precautions: Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to zinc salts. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment. Long-term use of high doses of zinc can lead to copper deficiency. Zinc can interact with certain medications, including:

  • Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics: Zinc can decrease their absorption; take zinc supplements at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these antibiotics.
  • Penicillamine: Zinc can reduce its absorption.
  • Thiazide diuretics: May increase zinc excretion.
  • Iron supplements: High doses of zinc can interfere with iron absorption, and vice versa; separate doses by several hours.
  • Calcium supplements: High doses of calcium can reduce zinc absorption.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
