Neugalin 25

Description

Neugalin 25 contains pregabalin, an anticonvulsant medication. It is used to treat neuropathic pain, partial-onset seizures, and fibromyalgia. It works by reducing the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain and spinal cord, which helps to lessen pain signals and seizure activity.

Pharmacology

Pregabalin binds to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system. This binding reduces the influx of calcium into nerve terminals, which in turn decreases the release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate, noradrenaline, and substance P. This modulation of neurotransmitter release is believed to contribute to pregabalin's analgesic and anticonvulsant effects.

Dosage & Administration

The dosage of Neugalin 25 varies depending on the condition being treated:

  • Neuropathic Pain: The typical starting dose is 150 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. The dose may be increased gradually as needed, up to a maximum of 600 mg per day.

  • Partial-Onset Seizures: The typical starting dose is 150 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. The dose may be increased gradually as needed, up to a maximum of 600 mg per day.

  • Fibromyalgia: The recommended dose is 300 to 450 mg per day, administered in two divided doses. Dosing should begin at 75 mg two times a day (150 mg/day) and may be increased to 150 mg two times a day (300 mg/day) within 1 week based on efficacy and tolerability.

Neugalin 25 can be taken with or without food.

Contraindications

Neugalin 25 is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pregabalin or any of its components.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Dizziness and Somnolence: Neugalin 25 may cause dizziness and drowsiness, which can impair mental and physical abilities. Patients should be cautioned about operating machinery or driving until they know how the medication affects them.

  • Angioedema: There have been reports of angioedema (swelling of the face, tongue, and throat) in patients treated with pregabalin. Discontinue Neugalin 25 immediately if this occurs.

  • Increased Risk of Suicidal Thoughts or Behavior: Antiepileptic drugs, including pregabalin, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Monitor patients for any changes in mood or behavior.

  • Withdrawal Symptoms: Abrupt discontinuation of Neugalin 25 may cause withdrawal symptoms. The medication should be gradually tapered.

  • Peripheral Edema: Neugalin 25 may cause peripheral edema (swelling of the hands and feet).
