Niconic

Indications: Niconic (Nicotinic Acid) is indicated for the treatment of nicotinic acid deficiency (pellagra) and the management of hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol and triglycerides). It may help to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides, and increase HDL ("good") cholesterol. It may also be used to reduce the risk of recurrent heart attack in patients with a history of myocardial infarction and high cholesterol.

Dosage and Administration: Dosage should be individualized by a registered medical practitioner. For hyperlipidemia, the initial dose is typically 500 mg at bedtime, gradually increased as tolerated. For niacin deficiency, higher doses may be required, divided throughout the day. Take with a low-fat meal and swallow whole with water. Avoid alcohol and hot beverages around the time of administration.

Side Effects: Common side effects include flushing (redness, warmth, itching, or tingling of the face, neck, and chest), itching, and gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea). These usually subside with continued use. Less common but potentially serious side effects may include liver problems, muscle pain, and changes in blood sugar.

Precautions: Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to nicotinic acid, significant liver disease, active peptic ulcer, or arterial bleeding. Use with caution in patients with unstable angina, recent heart attack, coronary heart disease, diabetes, gout, or a history of peptic ulcer. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Not generally recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
