Norium 10

Presentation: Each tablet contains Flunarizine Dihydrochloride BP equivalent to Flunarizine 10 mg. Available in strips or blister packs, with the number of tablets per pack determined by Eskayef Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh. The 10 mg strength is a standard dosage for migraine prophylaxis and vestibular vertigo.

Indications: Norium (Flunarizine) is indicated for the prophylactic treatment of classic (with aura) or common (without aura) migraine. It is also used for the symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo due to diagnosed functional disorders of the vestibular system. Flunarizine is a selective calcium channel antagonist that reduces excessive calcium influx into cells, preventing cellular calcium overload in blood vessels of the brain and inner ear. It also possesses some antihistaminic and sedative properties.

Dosage and Administration:

• Migraine Prophylaxis: The starting dose for adults under 65 years is 10 mg once daily at night. For patients 65 years and older, the starting dose is 5 mg daily at night. If the initial treatment is effective and well-tolerated after one month, the maintenance dose can be reduced to 5 days of treatment at the same daily dose with two successive medicine-free days every week. If no significant improvement is observed after two months of the initial treatment, it should be discontinued. Prophylactic maintenance treatment should not exceed six months and can be re-initiated if migraine recurs.
• Vestibular Vertigo: The usual dose for adults is 10 mg once daily. Treatment is typically administered for up to two months. If symptoms are controlled, the dose may be reduced to 5 mg daily for maintenance. If no significant improvement occurs within one month, the treatment should be discontinued.

Norium tablets are for oral administration and are preferably taken at night.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include drowsiness, fatigue, weight gain, and increased appetite. Less common side effects reported during chronic treatment include depression (particularly in patients with a history of depressive illness), extrapyramidal symptoms (such as bradykinesia, rigidity, akathisia, tremor), heartburn, nausea, gastralgia, insomnia, anxiety, galactorrhea, dry mouth, muscle ache, and skin rash. Elderly patients may be more susceptible to extrapyramidal symptoms.

Precautions: Norium is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to flunarizine, a history of depressive illness, or pre-existing symptoms of Parkinson's disease or other extrapyramidal disorders. It should be used with caution in elderly patients due to the increased risk of extrapyramidal symptoms. Flunarizine may cause drowsiness, which can be aggravated by alcohol or other CNS depressants. Patients should be cautioned against driving or operating hazardous machinery. Norium is not indicated for aborting an acute migraine attack. Weight gain may occur during treatment. The safety of flunarizine in pregnancy and lactation has not been established.

Storage: Store Norium 10 mg tablets below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
